What is a Food License?

A Food License is permission given by the government to a person or a company that wants to make sell, or transport food products in India. A food license is a legal requirement for individuals or businesses that handle and sell food products.

It is issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) or a state food authority.

The license ensures that the food business complies with the safety and hygiene standards set by the FSSAI.

A food license is important because it ensures the food products are safe, hygienic, and follow the standard set by the government.

Types of Food Licenses

There are two types of food licenses in India:

1. FSSAI Registration: This is a 14-digit registration number that is required for all businesses, regardless of their size or scale of operation. The registration is valid for 5 years and can be renewed.

2. Food license: This is a more stringent license that is required for businesses that manufacture, process, pack, store, or sell food to the public. The license is valid for 1 year and can be renewed.

There are three other types of food licenses in India based on their size, turnover, and location of the food business:

  • Basic: A basic license is for small food businesses that have an annual turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakhs.
  • State: A state license is for medium food businesses that have an annual turnover of more than Rs. 12 lakhs but less than Rs. 20 crores.
  • Central: A central license is for large food businesses that have an annual turnover of more than Rs. 20 crores, operate in more than one state, or export or import food products.

Importance of Food License:

Having a food license has many benefits for food businesses. Firstly, it helps them to create consumer awareness and trustworthiness about their food products.

Consumers are more likely to choose a food business that has an FSSAI license, as it indicates that the food is safe and hygienic. Secondly, it helps them to avoid legal hassles and penalties for non-compliance.

The FSSAI can take action against food businesses that violate food safety laws and regulations, which can result in fines, suspension, or cancellation of the license.

Thirdly, it helps them to expand their operations and access new business opportunities. Food businesses with an FSSAI license can supply their products to government institutions, schools, hospitals, and other sectors that require an FSSAI license. This can increase their market share and revenue. Fourthly, it helps them to gain valuable information and guidance on food safety and quality from the FSSAI. The FSSAI provides regular updates and best practices on food safety
